Downtown Montreal’s Société des arts technologiques is going full steam ahead with the 8th edition of its annual SAT Fest, starting Tuesday. This time, it’s bringing in a total of eight short, immersive films from an international set of artists.

Lasting a total of 53 days, the art, research and technology hub’s rooftop Satosphère theatre will be the centre stage for ticket-holders to see experiences that range from collages and visual studies to AI-generated environments and fictional stories.

Running three screenings a night from Tuesday to Saturday each week, SAT Fest’s format for the year follows on the success of the past month’s double feature screenings, which were sold out. Red-zone health restrictions and sanitary measures are expected to remain the same at the Satosphère, with such rules as a maximum of 50 spectators per screening, mask-wearing and no food or drink.
After receiving over 50 submissions from more than 10 countries, the SAT selection committee’s choices represent “an assortment of the best immersive productions of this pandemic year,” the event says in a statement. Artists from Mexico, Brazil, the U.K., France and United States join Canadian artists’ works on screen.
Given the the pandemic, viewers may be interested in Immunity by Montreal Life Support, which explores the field of microbiology, or simply enjoy the escapism of Somnium by French artists Dimitri Thouzery and Ludovic Finck.
